ENTERING SALES QUICKLY
Sometimes it's important to send someone an invoice and then record the receipt of payment separately.
However if someone pays you right away you can save yourself time by entering a "sales receipt" (instead of an invoice) in Quickbooks.
Click on Customers from the drop-down menu - then Enter Sales Receipt.
This effectively records sale and the customer payment in one simple step.
You can choose which bank/cash account to deposit it to.

» DEPOSITING CUSTOMER CHEQUES & UNDEPOSITED FUNDS
Quickbooks has a nice feature for recording customer cheque payments into a bank account.
Say you receive a couple of cheques from a different customers. They sit in a drawer until you're ready for a trip to the bank. Unless you plan to have a separate deposit slip for each cheque it's worthwhile to record the cheque to
undeposited funds. Before you head to the bank you can choose BANKING and MAKE DEPOSITS from the drop down menu. Choose which the cheques you're lodging. This should tally exactly with your deposit slip.
It also makes reconciliations easier.

» WHO ARE YOUR TOP CUSTOMERS ANYWAY?
If you've been in business for a while it's a good to keep an eye your customers year on year activity.
Select REPORTS - SALES - SALES by Customer summary (from the drop down menu)
Choose a date range (say 1-1-06 to today).
Change Columns drop-down menu from TOTAL ONLY to YEAR.
Sort descending. See if there is anyone who hasn’t been back.

» DATA VERIFICATION
As with any database application you want to keep an eye that the tables are healthy.
Click on File - Utilities - data verification.
What happens if you find data errors? It's probably worthwhile to find and fix those transactions. It’s a good idea NOT to try to install updates if you've got data errors in your file. See also this document on Fixing Quickbooks problems.

» TO TAB OR NOT TO TAB
Many folk like to click on their mouses but I'm still a fan or using keyboard shortcuts.
TAB to move to the next field.
How to reverse in Quickbooks : SHIFT+TAB
ALT-F6 to toggle between open windows.
